I was in many throughout college in upstate NY in the early 1970s. Everything from Frat-organized gimmick rallyes to formal time-and-distance ones done by the local SCCA. All were a blast, though I preferred the non-gimmick ones. I enjoyed being the driver, but equally being the navigator.
After starting work, I organized and Rally-Mastered time-distance rallyes once a year in Northern IL in the late 1970s. Lot of work, but a lot of fun. Then I talked buddies into organizing the next one which I drove and won 1st place (cause I had learned the roads so well from the earlier years of organizing). But haven't done any in over 25 yrs. One fav memory was asking a co-worker why she hadn't signed-up to run as she had the previous year. She explained that the previous one had nearly caused a divorce. She wasn't a good driver so her husband drove while she navigated. After she got them badly off-course a few times, hubby told her to drive. She promptly drove into a ditch, where they waited 2 hrs before getting a tow. (No cell phones at the time.) She said after they stopped fighting, they didn't speak for 3 wks. LOL You can look forward to great fun, and then great stories at the after party.

Dino, I'd be willing to help organize it if in the Chicago area. Needs to be out beyond the burbs. Preferably on some roads with curves and elevation changes (not just 1-mile square farm grids). Needs a lot of up-front planning and careful research. If exotics/supercars will run, need to avoid dirt and gravel roads. Needs multiple volunteers to assist with the start, multiple check-points, and finish. And needs good marketing to get a reasonable number of entrants. Need sets of printed instructions, and timing/score sheets for each checkpoint. Finally, need locations for the start (with a big parking lot), the checkpoints, and for the after party. Late spring thru early fall would be best. Figure 1 (or preferably, 2) months of prior planning, with several wkends dedicated to finding, documenting, and pre-testing the route and instructions. Lots of work, but great fun for all if done well.

That would be a good excuse.

Dino. I'd definately be down. I may be young but my dad did these all the time back in his college days. And We'd probably have to either go south or west. And plotting how to score would be tough. But keep the thread going and we'll brainstorm.
