Steven Rankins and Will Taylor, prepped and raced their 2009 Nissan "Cannonball GT-R" to the 1st Place Overall victory in the 2009 running of the One Lap of America. The unique event comprised:
- 63 starting entrants (street-legal modified cars), in 10 classifications - 2 or 3 drivers per car - 8 consecutive days of competition (May 2-9, 2009) - 18 individual race events (primarily road circuits, plus a speedway oval, autocross, drags, and dry & wet skidpads) - 9 race venues - 3400 miles of endurance driving between the race venues - little spare time for sleeping or eating, much less for car repairs if needed - natural weather conditions at each race event - only one set of tires per car for all the travel AND the racing. The GT-R took eight 1st Place and six 2nd Place finishes in the individual race events. It dominated every event in the rain and on wet tracks, including setting a track record for the WET skidpad event at over 0.95 g. The top overall finishers: 1st - Nissan GT-R (5215 points)* 2nd - Porsche GT2 (5010 points, or 96% of the GT-R's point total) 3rd - BMW M3 Coupe (4960, 95%)** 4th - Subaru WRX (4955, 95%)*** 5th - Corvette Z06 (4725, 91%) * - class winner, GT1-Big Bore ** - class winner, GT1-Small Bore *** - class winner, Mid-Priced Sedan Among the contenders, the back-in-the-pack, and the also-rans: - many Porsches (GT3, GT3 RS, 911 Turbo, 911 SC, 911, Cayman, Boxster) - numerous Z06 Vettes - Dodge Viper - numerous BMW M3's (including a Dinan) and M5's, plus an M6 and a Z4 - Audi S4 - Caddy CTS-V - STi, WRX, Evo, RX-7, Civic Si - Lotus Elise - Camaros and Mustangs (both new and old) - Dodge Magnum and Stealth and then the really strange stuff, including: - Mitsubishi Galant - an old Alfa sedan - an old Ford Galaxie 500 police cruiser - Honda Fit - Chevy HHR - Altima Hybrid - a 1948 Plymouth For more info, details, stats, pics, etc., see: One Lap of America - the Official Webpage www.CannonballGTR.com Also, co-sponsor Motor Trend has info on their website and will have magazine coverage in an upcoming issue.
